remove all un-nedeed microsoft softwares, and estimate vista disk size needs : I will keep it 60 Go
resize the windows partition with the windows tool (you will have problems if you use tools such gparted on vista)

linux install
now install linux (ubuntu ) from cd : just write boot loader on begin of partition, not on MBR !
reboot on windows, and configure easyBCD
I want to install several linux, so I use 20 Go for each linux, 20 Go for shared data, 20 Go for backup

no problem to install ubuntu 9.04

no problem to install fedora 11

no problem to install mandriva 2009.1 (but 2009.0 did not recognize well the display)
debian
no problem to install debian stable (lenny)
freebsd
I can install freebsd 7.2, but the network chipset was not recognized. So I install it as an virtualbox guest.
